WOMEN BUILD ON THE MOVE

GUELPH, ON, JUNE 29, 2010: After nearly 18 months of planning, Habitat for Humanity Wellington County’s Women Build Committee announced that they must put a hold on their 439 York Road site, due to issues and concerns with sewage hookups. Women Build will immediately be moving to a new property located at 133-135 Bagot Street in Guelph.

“This is actually great news”, said Executive Director Diane Nelson, “not only will we have a definite property for 2011, but the new property will be a much better fit for the chosen family”.

The Women Build group has been trying to resolve the challenges at York Road for several weeks after learning that the site was in need of a sanitary hookup prior to any construction commencing. Upon Habitat for Humanity learning that, at minimum, construction could not begin until October 2010, it was evident that the Women Build needed to be moved. Not only had Women Build participants been awaiting the start of construction since mid-May, but a family had been selected for the Women Build project, and they needed a home.

The first ever of its kind in Guelph, Women Build promotes women as leaders while providing an opportunity for women to learn new trades or skills. Women Build participants will now join the team at 133-135 Bagot Street where a semi-detached home will be constructed to house two worthy families.

The land on Bagot Street was donated to Habitat for Humanity by Skyline. Construction is anticipated to begin July 13th with a Blessing of the Foundation taking place on Friday, July 9th from 11am to 1pm.

“The bottom line is, we are still building a safe and decent home for a very deserving family,” pointed out Volunteer Coordinator, Annie Devitt.
